Isaac and the Egg by Bobby Palmer

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

Isaac and the Egg, a debut novel by Bobby Palmer (Jonathan Ball Publishers), instantly captivated me with its quirky charm. This unique, funny, and heartbreaking modern-day fable explores themes of grief, healing, friendship, and love, all wrapped in the transformative journey of a broken man.

The story begins when Isaac, engulfed in grief after the sudden loss of his wife, finds himself in the depths of despair, contemplating a leap from a bridge. However, fate has other plans for him. In the woods, Isaac hears a scream and stumbles upon an abandoned egg. Impulsively, he decides to take it home, unaware of the profound impact this chance encounter will have on his life.

This enigmatic character, aptly named Egg, is only disguised as an egg and turns out to be a two-foot-high fluffy snowman with a lemon-shaped head and long, feathery arms resembling boas. Egg becomes Isaac's unlikely companion, providing comic relief and offering solace in his darkest moments. Their peculiar relationship is akin to that of childhood imaginary friends, where communication often takes the form of spirited screaming. Through the presence of Egg, Isaac navigates the treacherous landscape of grief, finding solace and gradual healing.

Palmer's pacing, although occasionally tedious, complements the non-linear nature of grief. Isaac experiences a tumultuous journey through the various stages of mourning, from blackouts, denial, and anger to moments of stability, only to descend back into despair. As Isaac embarks on his path to recovery, he discovers that teaching Egg the English language serves as a welcome distraction from his grief. Witnessing the development of their bond and communication is truly heart-warming.

Isaac and the Egg defies conventions and stands out as an extraordinary literary work for me. It is a book that eludes easy categorisation and is best approached with an open mind, allowing the story to unfold organically. Palmer skilfully explores the complex nature of love in all its messy forms, the profound loss of a cherished partner, and the individual's struggle to navigate the depths of grief.

This fanciful and wonderfully strange tale resonated deeply, as it made unexpected sense and provided a relatable lens through which to view life's sundry challenges.
