Her Husband’s Son by Aviva Gat

As with Aviva Gat’s previous novels, her latest and sixth one, Her Husband’s Son, is an equally easy read offering an original plot with some delightful twists and intricacies to keep the reader glued. I’ve always admired Gat’s dedication to her craft and the seeming effortlessness with which she is able to invent a stunning tale.

I’ve read most of Gat’s work, which covers myriad, research-heavy topics – The Longer the Fall, about the treacherous minefield of American politics, being a good example.

With Her Husband’s Son, Gat tackles the sensitive subject of relationships, marriage, and the dilemmas and havoc that secrets can wreak in families. Lila and her husband, Ryan, built an enviable life together and are parents to two lovely young daughters. Lila has left her corporate job to look after the girls while managing her thriving at-home baking business. Meanwhile, Ryan is on the partner track at one of Los Angeles’ top law firms.

When Ryan comes home with the surprising – and disturbing – news that he has a teenage son that he never knew about and that his ex-girlfriend and the child’s mother had died, Lila is faced with some life-changing decisions and several unpleasant discoveries.

Her Husband’s Son is a heart-warming story about the power of motherly love, family commitment and a woman’s perseverance in the face of adversity.
