Each Mortal Thing by Michiel Heyns

Each Mortal Thing by Michiel Heyns, published by Penguin Random House, is a literary work of great depth. With a veritable feast of vocabulary and themes, including connection, kindness, friendship and finding one’s place in foreign environments, this award-winning author takes the reader on a uniquely emotional and intellectual journey.

The novel starts with Natasha, a novice South African writer from Beaufort West in the Karoo, nominated for a major British literary prize. Boarding her first-ever flight, she heads to London to partake in the award ceremony. On arrival, she is greeted by Terence, a young university lecturer who was the first to read and forward her novel to a British publisher. Terence becomes her guide, not only showing her London's renowned landmarks but also introducing her to his most cherished musical experience in the city.

A few days before the awards ceremony, her nomination as a finalist is withdrawn through no fault of her own. She returns to South Africa empty-handed and scorned, with only her memories of a wonderful few days in London and her short but sweet connection with Terence.

Terence takes centre stage in this novel, and the story delves into his relationships and connections with a diverse array of characters inhabiting London. After Natasha's departure and the tragedy that follows, Terence finds himself adrift and seeks solace in an unlikely encounter with a rough sleeper and his dog outside a tube station. As with his other interactions, this seemingly simple act of kindness unfolds into something intricate, with fascinating consequences that shape his journey.

Invited into the protagonist's mind, the reader accompanies him on a journey through past relationships, prompting contemplation of the significance of connections with others – including romantic involvements, acts of kindness, and friendships – and how these profoundly impact one's life. I also felt a close connection with Terence, a South African who relocated to the UK and relished experiencing London through his eyes.

There is so much more to this novel. Indeed, its depth compelled me to keep revisiting it for days after finishing it, discovering new cleverly woven aspects by Heyns each time. While I admit that reviewing such a literary gem is best left to the experts, one thing remains certain: Each Mortal Thing is a must-read for discerning readers.
